This cider keg was used at Chieveley in Berkshire, and is of the type which used to be pulled along behind carts and coaches with cider in them for thirsty travllers. The keg is made from 15 slats of unvarnished wood held together with four iron hoops. It has a small vent hole and a chain, and traces of blue and pink paint can be seen on the heads and hoop.

Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This keg is 10 inches long and the diameter is 6.5 inches at the heads and 7.5 inches at the centre. It is made from 15 slats of unvarnished wood held together by four iron hoops. The bung hole, 1 inch in diameter, is in a rectangular projection 3 inches long on the side of the keg. A small vent hole is pierced slightly above the bung hole. A chain 17 inches long was used for carrying the keg. This chain is attached to staples in the hoops. Traces of blue and pink paint can be seen on the heads and hoops. The keg was used at Chieveley, Berkshire.'
