Description
This is a seed cleaner, or 'corn screen', for producing quality kernel samples. It is a self-acting machine worked by the weight of the seed. There is a small brass plate with the patent number 8288, and two worn labels, one advertising the first prize won at the RASE (Royal Agricultural Society of England) Cardiff Meeting 1872. The machine was manufactured and patented by R. Boby of Bury Saint Edmunds.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – ‘Description: A self-acting machine worked by the weight of the grain acting upon a breast wheel placed between the hopper and the screen. Two cranks on the axis of this wheel are on each side connected by two rods to two metal frames, each carrying three rows of the cleaning collars; these working behind the wires of the screen keep them clean. On a small brass plate the cleaner has the patent no. 8288. There are two worn labels, one advertising the 1st prize won at the RASE [Royal Agricultural Society of England] Cardiff Meeting. 1872. // Associated information: No information particular to this item. // R.
