Description
This small weight jack was used for driving a basting spit before a fire. It has a bracket on one side by which it could be fastened to the wall above the fireplace. It consists of an iron framework and a wooden drum. A long iron chain runs over the drum and turns the mechanism by which the spit was driven. The drum is geared, enabling the spit to be turned very slowly at a uniform speed, and to overcome any extra resistance caused by the unequal balance of the joint upon the spit. It is not known where this jack originated or was used.
