Description
This is a horseshoe shaped tile for underdrainage of alluvial and clay farm land on the Isle of White. It was made and used by tenant farmers who may have obtained loans under the Public Monies Drainage and Improvement Act of 1846-1864. Tenant farmers were often assisted by the land owner who, in some cases, provided the tiles for the tenant to lay.
