This is a sledge hammer, a heavy tool with octagonal face and neck, flat cheeks and cross pane. Sledge hammers were used by wheelwrights to drive spokes into the hubs of cart and wagon wheels. This sledge hammer was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire.
