Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This large, man’s clog was given to Miss Smith by Mr. George Besley, wheelwright of East Hendred (Berks) who used to make clogs. // It is made mostly of wood, both the sole and the upper. It is made like a French sabot, not like the usual English pattern of clog, which has a wooden sole, and a leather upper. In this specimen, there is a cross piece of leather over the arch with eyes so that it could be laced up and a piece of leather nailed to both the sole and the heel to reinforce them. It has no iron on the sole. // The clog is well carved and has decorative lines over the toe cap. It is 13.5 inches in approximate length, the exact length being difficult to assess because the toe turns up at the end. // See also 51/28–30.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // 470. A large man's clog. Formely made by the wheelwright . G.Besley'
