Description
This paring chisel has an ocatgonal handle fitted with a tang to the blade, which has a bevelled edge shaped on a slight curve and is stamped with 'Isaac Greaves, Cast Steel'. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This paring chisel was used at the Middleton’s wheelwrights shop at Eddington (Berks). // The handle which is octagonal is 5 inches long, 1.25 inches wide at the joint with the shank and 1.45 inches at its extreme end. // The blade and shank together are 4.25 inches long. The blade itself is 2.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. It has a bevelled edge shaped on a slight curve. The blade and handler are fitted together by a tang. // The name of the maker, Isaac Greaves and the words Cast Steel are ingrained on the blade. // See also 51/354.'
