Description
The date of this pack saddle is unknown, though saddles of a similar shape were known to have been used on small ponies on the Cornish and North Devon coasts in the 1920s. It probably dates, however, from the nineteenth century. The words 'SILLARD TOTNES' are stamped on the front end.

MERL miscellaneous note - 'Until 18th century roads in England consisted mainly of beaten tracks; suitable only for pedestrian or pack horse travel; with greater economic activity of the period canals were built and roads improved and pack horse teams suffered a major decline; however in parts of Devon and Cornwall pack horses remained in vogue for longer. Date of this saddle is unknown; probably dates from the 19th century.'
