Description
This is a money collecting box used by the National Dairymen's Benevolent Institution (NDBI) to collect funds. It is made of wood, painted in racing green gloss paint, with a money slot on the top and a pivoting money retrieval slot on the base. An enamelled plaque on the front reads 'National Dairymen's Benevolent Institution'. The base is covered with green baize. The NDBI provided financial assistance to retired dairymen.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life) – 'Description: One of two collecting boxes used to acquire funds for the NDBI. Wooden box with money slot on upper surface and pivoting money retrieval slot on base, with metal pivot. Enamelled plaque on front of box reads ‘National Dairymen’s Benevolent Association’. Plaque attached by steel screws at each corner. Box surfaces (excluding cream plaque and unpainted base) painted with glass paint. Main colour ‘racing’ green, with edging done in dark brown bands. Evidence of old paper seal being adhered over retrieval slot on base. // Dimensions: Max width 165mm // Max height 128mm // Max depth 113mm // Associated information: This object is part of a small collection of artefacts, books, archival materials, and photographs received from the National Dairymen’s Benevolent Institution (NDBI) on the occasion of their closure. The NDBI provided financial assistance to individuals who worked in the diary trade (for a continuous period of seven years or more) and who had been required to retire due to age or ill health.
