Description
Twenty-two pallets used at Whitehall Brick & Tile Works in Aborfield Cross, Berkshire, in the 1970s. They were used to move the 'green' bricks from the brick moulds to the 'hacks' (drying sheds). Pallets were discarded when they became so worn that they spoiled the faces of the bricks - as was the case with these worn pallets.
Physical description

Archival history
MERL Catalogue Form (temporary) – ‘Pallet // Miss J. Wight // many of the pallets have been worn of both sides- ref sketch, presumable this is where the top and bottom of the stock board or mould has rubbed against the wood. Some of the pallets have broken blade edged- due to rot.’, MERL Miscellaneous note, Hilary Woolley, 1977 – 'Pallets/pallet boards or simply boards // Used, in pairs, for handling the green bricks from moulds to hacks (drying sheds). The indentations [sketch] are caused by their lying across the narrow planks of the hack barrow, which traditionally carries a total 40 bricks laid in 2 rows. (2 E. at a time 40 pallets in use + 1 to make ‘sandwiches’ to carry one by one.) When the pallets have become so worn that they spoil the brick faces they are discarded. // These worn examples from Whitehall Brick & Tileworks, Arborfield. In use in 1970s. I don't know what wood they are made of, but it is less dense than the beech used for the moulds usually.’
