Description
An auger is a boring tool used in a variety of woodworking trades to bore long deep holes. It consists of an iron shank with a T-shaped handle at one end and a boring device at the other. A taper auger, also known as a 'reamer', is shaped like a tapered conical half-funnel. It was used to enlarge, by side paring, an existing hole made by a shell or spiral auger. This auger, marked 'PG' near the handle, was used by Mr Greenwood, a master craftsman in the Stonor-Hambleden area on the Oxfordshire-Buckinghamshire border. The donor worked with Mr Greenwood's son, who was also a craftsman.
