Description
Five brush handles, for small hearth brushes used for sweeping up ash. They were manufactured at Messrs Brown Sawmills in Thatcham, Berkshire, probably in the 1920s - the handles would then be sent elsewhere for the bristles to be inserted. They are made of birch wood, from the woods near Thatcham. Three have a japanned paint finish and turned grips at one end - a standard pattern made at the Sawmills; and two are of natural wood with hand grips pierced through the wood above the brush head - these were known as 'easy grip' and were designed by Charles Parsons, who was Foreman at the Sawmills.
