Bracher and Sydenham (Manufacturer)

This is a 'Daughters of Ceres' medal from Studley College in Studley, Warwickshire. The College was established in Reading in 1898 to train young ladies in agriculture and horticulture, and moved to Studley in 1903. The College closed in 1969. This trophy came to the Museum as part of a collection of trophies, medals and other awards from Studley College. The medal has a green, red and white ribbon and a presentation box.

MERL Miscellaneous note, Greta Bertram, 22 April 2014 – In 1898 Frances Evelyn, Countess of Warwick, established a group of hostels in Reading to train young ladies in agriculture and horticulture. Within her ‘Agricultural Scheme for Women’ she sought to encourage educated women to work in light farming, gardening and rural occupations. In the first six years 225 students had been enrolled and Lady Warwick looked for more extensive premises. In 1903 the organisation moved to Studley in Warwickshire, and in 1908 took the name Studley College. The College closed in 1969, and the Studley College Trust was established to encourage assist and develop education, instruction and research in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and allied subjects.
