A marking gauge, used to mark parallel lines from a fixed margin. It is made of wood with a brass screw and trim. It is marked 'W. Newton'. The gauge is part of a set of cabinet maker's tools, many of which are marked 'W. Newton', suggesting this may have been the name of the cabinet maker from whom the donor acquired the set.
