Description
Flower baskets such as this, known as ‘walking baskets’, were carried by small girls in annual Whitsuntide walks of Sunday school children of all denominations – a tradition in the north west of England. The baskets would be filled with flowers on a foundation of moss. This flower basket was used by the donor every year when she walked with St. Peter’s Church in Ashton under Lyne. It is shaped like a small, flattened Gainsborough florist’s basket made of willow rod and skein, and with a handle of split bamboo, and dates from the 1930s.
