Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This saw was given to Miss Smith by George Besley, a wheelwright who was probably in business near East Hendred (Berks). // The bow saw consists of a very thin blade which is strained between the lower ends of the tool by a tourniquet device. The stick, which tightens the cord, rests in a slit in the central brace. There is a single handle which passes through one of the arms and receives the blade. The blade is held at the other end by a socket driven through the arm. The saw can be turned to any desired angle, and can be used to cross cut or rip wood. // The frame measures 14.25 inches by 8.15 inches, and the blade is 12 inches long.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // Heating and Cooking // 240A. bow-saw, given to me bythe [sic] wheelwright, George Besley'
