English language support for sanctuary seekers

Over the last three years, the International Study and Language Institute (ISLI) has worked with Breaking Barriers to help provide English language support for sanctuary seekers.

We support up to three clients of Breaking Barriers who are sanctuary seekers on our year-round pre-sessional courses and we waive the fees for those students. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided English language support for four students over two years, two of whom have been accepted on to full-time study on accredited courses at the University of Reading.

We have also helped Breaking Barriers recruit volunteer tutors from ISLI to help with their one-to-one online tuition for other sanctuary seekers. We have also provided workshops to support volunteers at Reading Refugee Support Group who offer befriending and language support.
