Role
Professor Simon Chandler-Wilde is Dean for Diversity and Inclusion – in a jobshare with Prof Ellie Highwood – and Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He studied mathematics and engineering mathematics at Imperial College and Newcastle. He then worked as a Research Assistant – at Bradford where he gained a PhD in 1988 in environmental noise propagation – and as an academic in mathematics or civil engineering at Coventry Polytechnic, Bradford, and Brunel University, before moving to Reading as professor in 2003.
In parallel with his Dean role (taken up in August 2015), Simon has been Head of the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences from 2010 to the end of 2015, prior to which he was Head of Mathematics from 2007-10.
As Head of School Simon has been proud to oversee a large expansion of research and teaching activity, and many diversity and equality-related actions, including Athena SWAN Silver awards, and work on flexible working and support at key career transition points, including rewards and promotions for all categories of staff. His research is focussed on the mathematics and computation of wave propagation and scattering problems. He is married – his wife a Dean at a nearby University – with two daughters, one a local town councillor.
