Memo, T. Barry Davies (School of Fine Art, University of Reading) to MERL, 6 May 1960 – ‘Chicken Water Feeder // This vessel, which had been unsold for years because it was damaged, was probably made before 1930 at the “rural” Pottery of Messrs. A.Harris and Sons, which is still active (1960.) // (The Pottery turns out a variety of ware, including plant pots, seed pans, drainpipes, etc., and uses some interesting methods of production). This vessel is brush-painted with a lithage glaze which they distilled themselves by boiling lead, which has since been banned under the Factory Acts and, therefore, examples of this type of glaze are becoming more and more rare. // I enclose a leaflet and a postcard [now accessioned in Archives as D78/16].’
