Beskrivning
This is a set of two pea tokens, last used at a farm in Sandon Lodge, Chelmsford, Essex until about 1940. One side shows the name of the buyers, 'L & H STARNS // SPITALFIELDS', and the other side shows the value, '1 s'. They have a diameter of 1 1/4 inches. Pea tokens were given to pickers in return for each bag of peas they picked, and were saved up to be later exchanged for money at the end of the week. According to the donor, in 1958, "now that the picking price has gone up so much the pickers like to have cash straight away, so the use of tokens has been discontinued."
