This round knife, sometimes called a 'half moon knife', is a saddler's tool with a semi-circular blade used for general cutting of leather, especially strips too wide for a plough gauge, and irregular shapes. It was purchased by the donor at a sale in West London, for use as a thatching tool. It is inscribed: 'J. Dixon // Warranted', referring to the manufacturer.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – 'Metal semi-circular knife with turned dark wood handle. It is stored in a strong leather pouch which was probably attached to a belt around the waist. // Inscription: J. Dixon // Warranted // ... // Knives of this type are traditionally used in leather preparation, shoe making and saddlery. // This tool was purchased by [the donor] at a sale in West London. Although purchased as a thatching tool it is most likely to have been a leather working tool.'
