The origins of this beading plane, a type of moulding plane, are unknown but it was given to the Museum by the Woodworking Department at the University of Reading. It produces a single bead. The stock is made of boxwood and beech and is stamped with 'J. Ames', 'G.G.', 'W. Davis' and the number '1'.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The origin of this plane is unknown. // This is a small ‘Bead’ moulding plane which produces a single bead in wood. The bead moulding in the sole, which corresponds to the shape of the blade, has been mortised into the stock, and is constructed of boxwood, whereas the remainder of the plane is beech. // The plane is 9.3 inches long, 3.1 inches high and 0.85 inches wide at the sole. The small semicircular shaped blade is 0.3 inches wide. The front end of the stock is stamped ‘J. Ames’ at the top end and with ‘G.G.’ and ‘W. Davis’ further down towards the sole. The back end bears the figure ‘1’ and the letters ‘G.G.’… See also 51/36M'
