Pattens are wooden shoes with an iron hoop beneath that were used by most countrywomen as overshoes to keep their feet out of the mud in the farmyard and around the dairy. These pattens have wooden soles, and would have had leather toe caps, side pieces and laces. The soles are riveted to oval irons on short legs.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'These are overshoes worn by most country women before the introduction of goloshes [sic] to raise their feet out of the mud of the farmyard and lanes. // They have wooden soles, rather crudely shaped, measuring 9.5 inches in length. Oval shaped irons on two short legs are riveted to the bottom of the soles and leather toe caps and side pieces are nailed to the sides, covered with a reinforcement of a thin strip of metal. One patten has one of the side pieces missing and both laces.
