Baker's pouch basket,

This delivery basket, known as a ‘baker’s pouch’, was made by G. T. H. Nason, a basketmaker from Canterbury, Kent. It is an oval, bellied basket made of white willow and cane with a roped cross handle. These baskets were used by bakeries for delivering bread by hand.

MERL ‘Stakeholders’ recording form, October 2014 – Object number: 66/350 (Baker’s pouch) // Name of recorder: Mary Butcher // General construction method: Stake and strand // Overall shape: Oval, bellied. // Materials: White willow, except for a row of pairing around the edge of the base in Palembang cane, and handle wrapping in same cane. // Base: Underfoot base, 6 layers (from side to side) in 3 pairs, shaved on one side (underneath). Short central stick which goes just beyond slath ties either end. This central stick goes under central pair of layers. 3 ties in with pairing at each end. Distance across layers 6 5/8” (16.3cm) [diagram]. 23 base stick ends at outer edge. 2 layers weave across slath separately but come together after the 3 slath ties – this happens at each end. 2 centre layers stay together always. Base paired (after the 3 ties) to edge, always starting with butts slyped and pricked in to left of base stick. Last pair thick – one round plus a few strokes to tuck in the tips. Strong crown, end to end and side to side. Depth at centre about 1 inch. // Sides: 32 stakes, a pair everywhere. Upsett – Palembang, slyped and pricked in, 2 on centre layers with one either side, 2 on next stakes to the right and to the left of the stakes themselves. One complete round of cane with ends tucked through. A pull-down wale. Wale is 4-rod, in front of 3 behind 1. This is followed by 3 or 4 rows of 3-rod wale in white willow, starting with tips on one side only. Finishes with tips. Stakes either side of central layers are woven separately in the upsett. Siding – English randing, starting to the left of stakes on central layers on one long side. The two stakes either side of the central layers are woven together now to provide a channel for the handle bow. Rods long enough to do a bit more than half a round. Randed to top and followed by a 3-rod wale. this is started with tips on one side only, one butt join at handle above tips (so rods long enough to go right round). Ends with tips above the butt join. // Border: 5 rod behind 2, heavy, 7 crams. All other spaces have cut ends of border rods on outside. High twists to bend rods down for border. Stake to left of handle channel cut off each side level with top of border before handle is wrapped. // Handles: Handle bow of very thick buff willow, a stick (2 or 3 year growth), ¾” (1.9cm) at butt. Slyped a little and inserted 5” (13cm) into basket on both sides, and goes between stakes either side of central layers. Wrapped with Palembang, slyped and tucked to left of bow (as seen from the outside) on one side only. This taken round 4 times, used up and second is slyped and tucked down to left of handle bow on same side of basket as first. One end finishes by being tucked under the handle wraps on one side. On the other side an end comes through to the inside, round inside handle and out again. // Lid: N/A // Dimensions: Base 12” (30.5cm) across; 16 ½” (42cm) end to end. Base after upsett 13” (33.1cm) across; 17 ½” (44.4cm) end to end. Max. IM (Inside Measure) end to end 23” (58.5cm) at a height of 6” (15.2cm). Max IM side to side at handle 17” (54.8cm) at a height of 6” (15.2cm). At top just below border, IM end to end 17.5” (44.5cm); side to side at handle 14” (35.6cm). At border OM (Outside Measure) end to end 18.5”; side to side at handle 15 ½” (39.7cm). At border IM end to end of border 16” (40.7cm); side to side at handle 13” (33cm).
