MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – 'PLANE (BADGER) // See drawings and note attached. // Marked: John Moseley + Son // Broad Street // Bloomsbury // London // H. LONGHURST // on end of stock.', MERL miscellaneous note - 'Name: BADGER // ... This plane was formerly in the possession of the donor's father, the late Mr. H.E. Longhurst of ... Stanhope Road, Reading. Mr. H.E. Longhurst finished his apprenticeship as a joiner at the turn of the century and bought this plane second hand from a Mr. Hambling of Three Mile Cross near Reading. He estimated the plane to have been made in about 1880. // This tool is used in forming the larger rebates in the making of joinery - such as those found in a door and window frames. It was used in conjunction with a plough plane, a tool used for making grooves. When the timber had been prepared, two gauge marks, one marking the width and the other the depth of the required rebate, were made. A series of grooves were made across the width of the desired rebate, thus removing the larger proportion of the timber. The remaining 'webs' were then cut out with chisel and mallet, and the rebate was finally finished to the gauge marks by using the badger plane. The cutting iron is set at an angle across the plane for easier working. // 30th January 1964'
