This shovel was originally used in Shareshill, Staffordshire, and on farms in the surrounding area. It is thought to date to at least the mid-nineteenth century. It is largely made of wood, but is reinforced at the top and bottom wiith metal bars.

MERL ‘Associated information’ form – ‘Name of Object: // Age…: // Name and address of present owner: // Description of use to which it was put…:’This shovel was in item of the 55/752-55/758 collection and was not accessioned then owing to very bad state of repair. // It was mended in March 1956 by Miss Austin of Aylesbury Museum. // [insert] Information from Mr Wood, letter dated 1st May 1960: 'Father, who is now 83 was pleased to see the photo (60/2250) of the shovel which he soon recognised and tells me that it belonged to a Mr Ephraim Cope of Shareshill, Wolverhampton wo went from farm to farm threshing with the flail etc... the shovel.. is well over 100 years old.
