Beskrivning
This is a large meat dish made of earthenware printed with an elaborate oriental scene framed with flowers and foliage. Blue was the favourite colour for transfer printing on pottery in the nineteenth century. The pattern was engraved onto a copper plate from which an impression was taken in ceramic colour on dampened tissue paper which was then rubbed onto the pottery. Adaptations of illustrations from travel books, and copies of oriental designs were common on transfer printed pottery. It is not known who the maker was or how Lavinia Smith acquired this dish.
