Beskrivning
This marking hammer bears the initials 'J.H.B' on the punching surface. It belonged to the donor's grandfather, who originally lived in Sparkford, Somerset, and was also used by her father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire. The hammer was used to mark wooden objects with the maker's initials. It consists of an iron head with a wooden handle slottled through the eye in the centre of the head. One end of the head has the initials, and the other has a small wedge ending in a sharp edge, which was used for general splitting work. These types of tools were also used to remove strips of bark and mark the wood of trees due to be felled in a forest.
