This is a firmer chisel, also known as a 'butt chisel'. It was used for fine joinary and cabinet work such as the housings for butt hinges. It is a broad bladed chisel, with a short wooden handle and brass ring fixing. The handle is split and damanged as a result of being struck with a mallet. The blade is stamped 'ISAAC GIA - - - - CAST STEEL', part of the isncription being illegible. It was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire.
