Scales like this, of a spring balance type, were used for weighing wool and are designed to weigh both heavy and light loads. It consists of two iron hoops and two hooks all fixed onto a springed metal ring.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'These scales, which like the steelyard are adjustable for weighing both heavy and light loads are of a type commonly used in the nineteenth century for weighing wool. The instrument consists of two iron loops, one large and one small, and two hooks, all of which are fixed onto a springed metal ring 3.8 inches in diameter. Within this ring is a brass faced graduated scale, and as the weight is put on either of the two hooks, the stress on the springed side of the instrument causes the indicator pin to move and the weight can be read off. By using the large ring and large hook, which are directly opposite one another on the instrument, weights from 20 lbs. to 300 lbs. can be weighed. The smaller hook and ring which are located close to one another on the side of the scales, weigh up to 50 lbs. The graduated scale on one side is marked 20, 40 and in forties up to 280 lbs. and finally 300 lbs. While the other side is marked in fives up to 50 lbs. // The scales from the tip of the large ring to the bottom of the large hook measures 10.2 inches in length, while it is 3 inches in width at its greatest extension.'
