Beskrivning
This is a linen surveyor’s tape, 66 feet long, with links marked on one side and inches on the other. It comes in a painted circular wooden container. Surveying tapes could be made of linen or steel – linen tapes were only to be used in fine weather as linen stretches when wet and shrinks when dry. The link is a measure of 7.92 inches, with 25 links to a pole, 100 to a chain, 1000 to a furlong and 8000 to a mile. This tape was probably used by the donor’s grandfather in Kent.
Arkivhistorik
Mrs Demusiak inherited the tape measure from her grandfather, who was either a Baker or a Withers, and whose family lived, farmed and worked in the following parishes in Kent - Otford, Edenbridge, Brasted, Four Elms, Tunbridge Wells, Hever, Cowden and Oxted (Surrey).
