Beskrivning
This wooden chest is made of single pieces of timber which slot into the legs. There is a hinged lock plate at the front of the chest with a key. This chest is said to have been found in a chimney at Mere, Wiltshire. Simple boarded chests like this were made from the Middle Ages up to the nineteenth century and could also serve as tables, seats or beds.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life): “Wooden chest with sides, front, back and top made of single pieces of timber. These slot into the legs which are also single pieces of timber which extend below the main body of the box. The remains of one wooden hinge at one end of the box. Two more recent metal hinges have been added. There is a hinged lock plate at the front of the chest with a key. The chest has a paper lining and one leg has been repaired. / / Said to have been found in a chimney at Mere.”
