The original painting was made for the Duke of Bedford in 1804 to commemorate an event on his estate. Fine animals were admired at this gathering, much as they are at livestock shows today. The artist appears in the bottom left hand corner, with a sculpture intended to show desirable breed traits. A similar sculpture can be seen in the Forces for Change gallery downstairs.

MERL 69/192
