This is a mezzotint print of a painting entitled 'Spottiswoode Ox', by A. Nasmyth. It was engraved by J. Ward and published in 1804 by Anthony Cardon of London. The print depicts an ox which was bred by John Spottiswoode of Spottiswoode, Berwickshire, and is dedicated to the Right Honourable Lord Sheffield, President of the Board of Agriculture. It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.
