Trade tokens were often issued in the late eighteenth century by merchants. They were used to trade during times of coin shortages but also for advertising purposes. This token was issued in 1794 in Norwich, and features a shield design on one side with 'Norfolk and Norwich Halfpenny 1792' and an image of castle and lion with 'May Norwich Flourish Pro bono publico' on the other.
