This compass plane was given to the Museum by the Woodworking Department at the University of Reading. Compass planes have concave or convex blades for smoothing curved surfaces. This plane has a convex blade and can be adjusted to suit the curve of the surface being planed. The stock is stamped 'H.J' and 'W. Sargent, West Street, Reading'.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Compass planes were used by carpenters for such things as the smoothing of concave furniture surfaces or wall curves. The sole is convex longitudinally, resembling the rocker of a child’s cradle. The blade has a slightly convex edge and protrudes from a wide mouth, 2.4 inches across. The curved beech stock is 8 inches long and is 2.5 inches high at the front and 2.2 inches high at the back. At the front the stock is 2.0 inches wide, 2.8 inches wide at the blade, which is 2.5 inches from the front and 1.8 inches wide at the back. The shavings are discharged upwards through a hole in the middle of the stock. A brass screw is located at the top of the stock, .9 inches from the front. When this is turned in an anti-clockwise direction, it causes a metal plate on the sole to be pushed outwards. This projection which is convex in shape is 1.5 inches long by .5 inches wide and it is located at the bottom, with its long sides parallel to the blade. This has the effect of decreasing the convex character of the sole, so that it can be adjusted according to the character of the surface to be planed. The stock is stamped ‘H.J.’ at the back and ‘H.J.’ ‘Warrented’ [sic] and W. Sarjent [sic], West Street, Reading, in capital letters.', This object was stolen from an exhibition in 1980.
