Citation in publication [H. J. Massingham, 'Country Relics' (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1939)] –'I also have a "wash-" or "dipping-hook" from Worcestershire, with a very long handle and iron tines, in a double ogee curve, the end of one tine facing inwards, the end of the other outwards. One bar was used for guiding the sheep into the deeper water of the washpool and the other for drawing them in or pulling up their heads if there was any danger of drowning. It is very old, but I have seen a similar implement in use on upland farms in the Cotswolds, not for washing but dipping the sheep after the shearing.' (p.133), MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC. NO.: 51/135 // NAME: DIPPING HOOK // NEG NO.: 35/201 // STORAGE: Lost while on loan.'
