This pole shave, also known as a rounder plane, was used in R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights shop in Eddington, Hungerford, for shaving down poles, spokes and ladder rungs. It consists of a wooden stock with a handle at each end and a circular groove in the centre, above which is fixed a steel cutting blade made by W. P. Ward. Tools like this were usually home made.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This pole shave was in use in the Middletons' Wheelwrights' shop during the 19th century, for shaving poles and ladder rungs, etc. // It consists of a rectangular block of wood with two handles and a blade set in the round groove in which the pole was placed...
