These four wooden ladles are each made of a single piece of carved sycamore and belonged to the donor's father. They were used for ladling toddy - a hot drink of whisky or other strong alcohol, sugar and hot water.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Nothing is known of the origin of these ladles, beyond the fact that they had belonged to Mrs. Howard’s father, and had been in disuse in their home for about 60 years. // These four small ladles are made of sycamore and each is carved from a single piece of wood. They were used for ladling toddy, which is a beverage composed of whisky, or other spirituous liquor with hot water or sugar. Each ladle is 7.6 inches long and the well balanced, curved handles are each 6 inches long. The round bowl of each ladle has a diameter of 1.6 inches.'
