This side axe was used by a family of tent peg makers at Turville village green. It was used for splitting wood for making tent pegs and chair legs. Its age is not known, but the axe head appears to be older than the handle, which is probably a home made replacement. The axe head is inscribed 'W. GILPIN // WEDGES MILLS // WARRANTED'.
