Gags like this, also known as 'farrier's gags', were used to keep the horse’s mouth open whilst administering a ‘ball’ or drench. This gag was made in a village smithy in Kent.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Farriers’ gags were used to keep the horse’s mouth open while a “ball” or drench was administered. The gag was inserted into the mouth while flat like a bit, and the mouth was forced open by the spike being depressed. The horse was thus prevented from biting. The ball was then thrust to the back of the throat, with the head held up, so that the dose slid down easily. // This gag was made in a village smithy in Kent.
