This gaff was used for drawing hay or straw from a fodder shed. It is made of iron and would have had a wooden handle, which is now missing. The donor found it, along with numerous other objects, in a field after deep ploughing.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – ‘Gaffs were used for drawing hay or straw from fodder sheds. This specimen was found in a field after deep ploughing and the handle was missing. The gaff head consists of an iron cylinder tapering to a point. Near this point is an iron projection 2 inches long. The cylinder measures 12 1/2 inches and has a hole at the point where it was originally rivetted to the handle.’
