This grease and ruddle (a variety of red ochre) container was carried by a shepherd into the fields to treat and mark sheep. It is one of a pair purchased at a farm sale at Poolham Hall. It is a wooden case with a strap of thick string by which it would be hung over the shepherd's shoulder.

A letter from Miss F. A. R. Murray, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer of Lincolnshire Local History Society, to John Higgs dated 25 July 1955 indicates that the ‘grease and ruddle container’ was given to the History Society by Col. Briggs, who purchased it in a Kesteven (a traditional subdivision of Lincolnshire) farm sale. A second letter, dated 11 February 1956 indicates that the container was given to the History Society by Mr James H. Wright, who purchased it at a sale in Poolham Hall, Lincolnshire.
