This is a branding iron, which brands the letter 'F' in the middle of a spiked circle. The museum holds little information about its origins. It was formerly part of the collections at the museum in Maidenhead.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – ‘… // DATE ACQUIRED: // GROUP: // NEGATIVE: // PERIOD: // PLACE OF ORIGIN: // NUMBER: // DESCRIPTION: …‘ The origin of this branding iron is unknown. // It consists of an iron rod with a ring at one end which divides into four at the other end to support the face of the iron. Two opposite arms support the top and bottom of the letter "F", the other two arms support a tooth edged ring which encircles the "F". One ot the teeth is missing which leaves 32. The inner edge of the circle is smooth except for the two notches at the top and a small one at the bottom. // The diameter of the face of the iron is 5.3 inches and the whole tool is 21.6 inches long. // See also 51/447 L. //
