This is one of 214 duplicate 'gold' medals awarded to Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies between 1839 and 1889, and came from the company's Cape Town branch when the branch was closed. At the time of accession, the original medals were still in the possession of Ransomes. The original medal showed on the one side a wreath with the inscription 'CRYSTAL PALACE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION 1882' and on the other side there is a woman who holds a sceptre; this one-sided duplicate shows the woman. The original dated from the London Exhibition in Crystal Palace in 1882.
