Описание
This shopping basket was found by the donor in the garden shed at her house in Reading. It is oval in shape with straight sides and slightly flown ends. The ends are higher than the sides. It has a single handle running from end to end, which has a black tape repair. It is made of brown and white willow.

MERL ‘Stakeholders’ recording form, December 2013 – Object number: 2000/8 // Name of recorder: Mary Butcher and Maggie Smith // General construction method: Stake and strand // Overall shape: Oval basket with straight sides, slight flow on ends, ends are higher. Handle going from end to end. // Materials: Brown and white willow. Black tape repair on handle. // Base: Traditional English oval base with 4 short sticks (layers) shaved on underside centre of white willow. After middle (tying in slath) weave is pairing, starting with butts. Band of brown pairing with two rows white on edge. Last 2 rows chain-paired at one end but not the other. Pairing and chain-pairing appear to be used randomly. Base also has short stick in centre which is partially broken/missing. // Sides: Upsett – 4-rod wale starting with tips on one side only. On butt join then finishing with tips. 36 stakes. 2 setts of slewing rods starting opposite each other on right shoulder. Weave – 2-rod slew for 13.5cm. Ends packed with slewing. Total band of slewing at ends 19.5cm at both ends. Brown willow. Stakes either side of the handle bow at each end are woven with 2 handles. Bows as one. Waling – 2 rows of white 3-rod waling. Starting with tips on left shoulder. Butt join at handle, finishing on right shoulder. 2 complete rows of waling only, therefore didn’t see whole rod to preserve pattern. // Border: Trac border – behind 1, in front of 1, behind 1, in front of 1, behind 1 and out (rods ending on outside – 2.5cm high). // Handles: One end to end cross handle. 2 handle based going right through siding. 2 rods inserted right to left of handle bows (looking from outside) on each side. Rods are cranked and then wrapped round handle bow. The handle rods cross the length of the basket then go from outside to inside below waling. Come vertically on inside and go back again touching original pair. Finish – one tip goes under hand wrap and is fed away to left in border other wraps and is tucked away. Shaping of handle is quite flat as travels over basket. Handle height 26cm to underside of handle from base. // Lid: – // Dimensions: Base 30cm (length) x 16cm (width).
