Nothing is known about the origin of this ratchet hanger, which was used for suspending cooking utensils over an open hearth. It has a tubular upright, six teeth and a grooved and curled hook, with some ornamentation.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This hanger has a tubular upright 3 feet 6 inches long. It has a hook at one end, the short arm of which is 3 inches. At the other there is a knob from which the loop is suspended. The ratchet is 18 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. It has six teeth. The hanger is slightly ornamented, the hook on the ratchet being grooved and curled. There is a curled leaf shaped ornament at the top of the outside edge of the ratchet.
