This painted wooden cabin block, in various colours, comes from a butty boat, 'The Duchess of Athol'. The block shows a castle against a mountainous backdrop, with a river and two boats in the foreground. 'The Duchess of Athol was built by Nurser of Braunston, Northamptonshire, for John Green of Macclesfield, and the paintings were done at the boatyard of the Anderton Company in Stoke-on-Trent.

Letter, The Wyvern Shipping Company Ltd. to Margaret Fuller, 5 January 1959 – ‘With regard to the items you already have these came off a butty boat called the “Duchess of Athol” which we have now cut in half and turned into two pleasure craft. She was build by Nurser of Braunston, Northamptonshire, for John Green of Macclesfield and I thin the paintings were done at the Anderton Company’s boat-yard at Stoke on Trent where this boat was regularly docked. The Anderton Company has now been absorbed by the Mersey Weaver Carrying Co. // The can I am bringing was painted by Frank Jones of L.B. Faulkner Ltd., Leighton Buzzard, a yard which has just closed. It was painted for us for one of our boats. // I would like to point out that all this decoration is really applied to boats and never to barges. Technically speaking a barge is a boat of more than 14 ft. beam and all the stuff that you have from us comes off narrow boats of 7 ft. beam. the men who work them are always referred to as “boatmen” or “boaters” never bargees who are a lower form of life and now extinct. The term “narrow boat” is a definite technical term depicting one particular type of craft which is used for carrying over the whole of the Midland Canal system and it is only these boats which are painted in this particular manner. I think the elaborate painting of the past will die out because of its cost. It has already died out completely from the agricultural cart and nearly from the gypsy caravan.’
