This is a box wheel churn, or paddle churn, used for making butter from cream - turning the handle turns the wheel and churns the cream into butter. It was made in Worcestershire, and used at Stocken Hall, Rutland. It stands on a four-legged table, and is belt-driven.

MERL ‘History Artefacts’ card – 'Description: A box churn fixed to a table. The table has four legs each slightly splayed out and with metal feet for screwing to the floor for rigidity. There is a slatted tray underneath to hold a bucket or other utensils. // The churn is set into the table top and firmly fixed. It is strengthened at each end with two metal rods bolted into position. The paddle is a solid disc shaped piece of wood with metal fixings. There is a wooden lid which fits over the paddle and into grooves on the ends of the churn. The lid prevents cream spraying out of the churn but leaves enough space for ventilation. // Description cont: The churn is belt driven and has a wooden driving wheel and leather belt.
