This is a model of a harrow, a cultivating implement used for covering over seeds once sown. This model was donated by Agricultural Machinery Department at the University of Reading.

MERL ‘History Artefacts’ form - ‘MERL // Disc Harrow // CULTIVATING Harrowing // Description: main beam- wood, panted red carries front axle and hitching device at one end; disc axles at other. Discs- set on two axles, are either side of harrow and at right angle to main beam (adjustable) each axle carries six, concave metal discs, (black) at the end of each axle is a removable wheel. Above each set discs is a rectangular metal trough, (painted green) and the driver’s seat rises between these at the end of the main beam. In front of the driver’s seat is one lever which adjusts the angle of the disc-axles and another which adjusts the depth of the discs in the ground. Behind the seat is a lever controlling a single spring tine which cuts the ground between the two sets of discs.’
